About Physical Therapy
What is physical therapy?
Physical therapists are specially trained in the examination and treatment of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular problems that affect a person's ability to move and function efficiently in daily life. A physical therapist can reduce pain and restore function for patients with injuries, and can also provide preventative programs that promote general health and fitness.
Why is physical therapy effective?
Injuries, disease, and aging can leave you with difficulty performing normal, basic movements. Physical therapy helps you regain movement and heal faster, making everyday activities like walking, bouncing a basketball, or typing at a computer easier. Physical therapy teaches you specific exercises that strengthen weakened muscles and increase range of motion so you can move and function with greater ease.
What conditions do you treat at Amherst Physical Therapy?
We work with patients of all ages across a broad range of orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions. Common reasons patients come to us include post-operative orthopedic rehabilitation, sports-related injuries, youth athletic injuries, arthritis, neck and back pain, tendonitis, soft tissue injuries, and chronic headaches caused by muscle tension or posture.
Do I need a doctor's referral to start physical therapy?
New Hampshire allows patients to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician referral. Some insurance plans still require a referral for coverage, so it's worth confirming before your first visit. Call us at (603) 672-5125 and we'll check your plan's requirements with you.
Your First Visit
What can I expect on my first visit?
Your therapist will ask you about the history of your injury. Depending on your injury we may take measurements, and depending on your pain level we may even begin treatment on that first visit. You'll leave with a clear understanding of your findings and your plan of care.
How long are physical therapy appointments?
The first appointment is approximately one hour. Follow-up appointments range anywhere from 20 minutes to one hour, depending on how you feel and where you are in your recovery.
What should I wear to physical therapy?
Wear something comfortable, loose, and easily movable so we can access the area causing you pain. For example, if you are coming in for knee pain, wear or bring shorts or pants loose enough to be pulled up over the knee.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, and any referral, imaging results, or surgical notes from your physician if you have them. Completing your registration through our patient portal ahead of time will shorten your check-in.
Treatment and Recovery
How long should I expect to undergo physical therapy?
We believe each person has unique needs. All patients are carefully evaluated and then recommended an appropriate treatment plan. At the time of your evaluation we will be better able to determine an effective time frame for your treatment.
Will physical therapy hurt?
Some treatment and exercise can produce temporary soreness, particularly early in recovery or after surgery. Your therapist works within a level you can tolerate and will adjust your program based on how you respond. Tell your therapist what you're feeling — that feedback shapes your treatment.
Will I have exercises to do at home?
Yes. Your therapist will prescribe individualized exercises to perform between visits and after discharge. Consistency at home is what turns short-term progress into lasting recovery, and every exercise is demonstrated in the clinic before you're asked to do it on your own.
Will I see the same physical therapist every visit?
Yes. You work with the same physical therapist throughout your plan of care, so your progress and goals stay with the person treating you.
Insurance and Billing
What health insurance do you accept?
We accept most major insurances. Please call us at (603) 672-5125 and we'll gladly check with your insurance company on your behalf before you schedule.
What if I don't have insurance or don't want to use it?
We offer self-pay rates for both initial evaluations and follow-up treatments. Please contact the office directly at (603) 672-5125 for current self-pay pricing.
How do I pay my bill?
You can pay your bill securely online with a credit or debit card, or in person at the clinic. Online payment lets you view your balance, make a one-time payment, and download a receipt.
